Hilo Vacation

Hilo has some great activities that people enjoy, from Coconut Island (an island with a foot bridge connecting it to Hilo) to Kalakaua Park and Liliuokalani's beautiful gardens. Rainbow Falls are also here and offer a picturesque scene that will impress you. Any photographer from amateur to professional will enjoy taking pictures of this pristine waterfall.

Coconut Island

Coconut Island is connected to Hilo by a walking bridge and makes for a great spot to watch the sun rise in the sky. Local fisherman come here to see what fish they can catch for their lunch or supper. You can also watch sea turtles swimming as you walk along the foot bridge. If you want, you can take a picnic lunch and take advantage of the peaceful atmosphere surrounding you on the island.

Haili Church

Although currently needing some restoration, the historic Haili Church is a great spot to go see while in Hilo. It was the first building in Hawaii constructed completely out of wood. It was built back in the 1850s and has survived a fire and some unnatural threats as well. Currently, there is fund seeking to restore the old church and to secure the foundation for years to come to keep this historic structure.

Lyman Mission House and Museum

The Lyman Mission House and Museum is a great spot to visit to see the more historical roots of Hawaii. It gives a historical look into Hawaii, the culture, and the people, but it also has a world view and includes ancient Chinese art. It also hosts special exhibits, with past exhibits including Smithsonian and Korean themes. While you are in Hawaii, this would be a great place to go to enrich your knowledge and understand more about the culture, people, and statehood of Hawaii.

Naha Stone

The Naha Stone was supposed to test the ability of the kings of Hawaii. The prophecy said that the king that was able to move it would unite all the kings and would be the greatest king of Hawaii. At age 14, Kamehameha lifted it end over end, signifying that he would be the greatest king ever and unite all the islands of Hawaii. He did unite them in 1810, but it is disputed whether he was the greatest of the Hawaiian kings. When you see the stone, disbelief of this feat will occur. The stone is approximately 5000 pounds and looks impossible to move.
